Ice Cats Trounce Emerson Lions in Annual Boylston Cup 11/08/08

The Berklee Ice Cats captured the coveted Boylston cup last year on November 8th, 2008 in front of about 400 fans who packed the Walter Brown Arena at Boston University. Having beaten the Emerson Lions for three years straight, the players and fans alike were rowdy all evening. Berklee’s own Naomi Gillies sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” as the students were getting antsy for some action. After being tied 1-1 after the first period, the Ice Cats lengthened their lead to 5-1, and held off the hungry Lions to win it 7-5. Mike Flynn scored three goals, along with one each from Tim Philips, Dan Shapiro, Neal Warner, and Captain Jimmy Gately. As Berklee’s only athletic team, the Ice Cats win, coached by Ivan Chopik, was a sweet victory indeed.

There was as much action in the stands as there was on the ice. Emerson fans were talking trash and holding up hand-written signs that said “Music Sucks,” “Score My Film,” “McCain loves Berkleey” (note the spelling), “John Mayer Dropped Out,” and a poster that had some eighth notes with a slash through them. A Berklee percussion group proudly marched throughout the arena, banging on bongos, cowbells, and various drums, not to mention a melodica. Mingus the Jazz Cat was also there to get the crowd going.

The rowdiness on the ice yielded 28 minutes of penalty time for the Ice Cats, and 32 minutes for the Lions, for a combined total of 60 minutes. There were plenty of fists thrown during brawls in each period; even one of the referees got knocked down trying to break up a fight. The crowd loved it. Among the music students and the film students on and off the ice, everyone enjoyed an exciting evening of showmanship and spectacle.
